Such were the conclusions drawn during the panel on what shale gas extraction means for Poland. Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak, who, along with the entire Polish government, is in favour of searching for alternative gas sources in Poland, played down hype saying that „no bore has been drilled for us to be able to say with 100% certainty whether this gas exists in Poland, and only in seven to ten years” time will we have the technical solutions required for its extraction.”

Representatives of foreign companies who have prospecting licenses in Poland pointed to numerous problems connected primarily with environmental protection, and to the high costs associated with the preliminary phase of excavation works. In the USA excavation companies are able to obtain tax relief.

„It is worth paying attention to the difference between our country and the USA when it comes to geology and regulations governing investment processes,” said the head of PGNiG Michał Szubski. „Drilling one bore costs 40-60 million PLN.”
