– Poland cannot miss another chance to adopt the euro – said Ludwik Kotecki, the Government’s plenipotentiary for adoption of the European Union’s currency, during the panel „Polish way to the euro – what stage are we on?”, which took place on the first day of the 19th Economic Forum in Krynica.
– For that reason we are going to proceed with the preparations despite the uncertainty concerning when we will be able to fulfil the Maastricht criteria. According to Kotecki, we had the first opportunity in the years 2007-2008. The second one is only a matter of time.

Exactly a year ago in Krynica, prime minister Donald Tusk announced that we will change the złoty for the euro in 2012. Economists” analyses suggest that currently the most optimistic version is the year 2013, or 2016-2017 in more pessimistic scenarios.
– However – as Dariusz Filar, a member of the Monetary Policy Council (RPP), emphasised – the time when we enter the euro zone depends only on whether we will be able to fulfil the Maastricht criteria. The global crisis is not helping us to achieve that, but neither for the European Central Bank, nor for the European Commission it is an argument for relaxing the criteria for entering the zone.
