„Over recent years the European Union has expanded more than ever, but that does not mean that it is integrated,” said Professor Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament and a special guest of the session.”Common policies, such as regional or agricultural, are the symbol of European policy, and now also energy policy. Particularly in the case of the latter, this is necessary in order to have a stronger bargaining position in negotiations with external partners.”

Aleksander Kwaśniewski, the former president of Poland, added that the EU has lost its power due to „national egoisms” which have arisen (he indicated, among other things, the Slovak-Hungarian conflict), and protectionism on the part of certain countries.

„One may have the impression that Europe is moving backwards,” he said.

Kwaśniewski emphasised that this year’s forum is an opportunity to recall important anniversaries: the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the World War II and the 20th anniversary of the Round Table. „It was from Poland that impulses for change originated 20 years ago,” he added.

The session’s participants devoted substantial amount of time to the current economic situation. „Poland is a green island in a sea of global crisis, and thanks to Poles involvement we can boast growth,” said Waldemar Pawlak, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy.

However, there are various ways of fighting the recession. „There is no point in fighting the crisis with more interventionism. It is better to give people more freedom,” said Jose Maria Aznar, the former Spanish prime minister. „Greater stability, competitiveness, energy security, fewer taxes, wider privatisation – these are the bases for transformation of the European economy and helpful in overcoming the crisis,” said Aznar. Asked about UE enlargement, he said that he could see the possibility of Ukraine's joining the Community.

According to John Monks, the Secretary-General of the European Trade Union Confederation, coming generations will have to pay for the crisis, too. „Despite the fact that the idea of the welfare state was fought against, now, thanks to elements of the welfare state, it is possible to support economies during the crisis.” he stated.
