Lekcja 19: Equal Access

Are employment opportunities between the disabled and the able-bodied equal? Are employers and the government enhancing the employability of the disabled? Unfortunately, the chances of being hired by a company are minuscule.

According to the statistics from 2006, Polish companies, whether they were private or state, hired only 14% of disabled people, compared to the European Union, which hired 40%. Government agencies, who should be promoting the trend hired only 2%. As for this year companies have been equally discouraged by bureaucratic procedures.

Barriers of employability

Transportation is one of the major problems facing the disabled. Without a customized transportation system, many disabled people who would be willing to join the workforce will be confined to their homes. In recent years some attempts have been made to deal with the transportation needs of the disabled, however the problem still remains complex but not insoluble.Besides the above mentioned problem an additional barrier for the disabled is access to public facilities and buildings. Generally work places and institutions have not been made fully accessible. With a few exceptions the majority of buildings act as deterrents to employment.

Prejudice and indifference

Generally many people including potential employers are still prejudiced against the disabled who are often stereotyped as incapable and have no abilities to manage work. Perhaps worse than this attitude is indifference. People don’t believe in the potential of a disabled person, that is why they do not consider it worthwhile to invest time and money to hire and train such people.

Solutions

We should not be afraid to hire the disabled. There are companies in Poland who have done so and are making the effort to promote their employment. It is only through the publicity of such successful cases that can help to change the attitude of potential employers.
