Lekcja 37: Financial Consultants

While looking through job ads, whether in a newspaper or on a website, you can’t help but notice the growing number of posts in the financial and banking sector. At the beginning of this year graduates in finance could choose from seven thousand vacancies on job portals, twice as much compared to the previous year

The biggest demand is for financial and investment consultants. I decided to take a closer look at the job skills needed to become a financial consultant and what it takes to be successful in this line of business.

Malwina:

Mr. Stewart, thank you for finding the time for me. I know you are a very busy man.

Mr. Stewart:

That is true, my schedule is quite tight, however I’d love to shine some light on what it’s like being a financial consultant.

Malwina:

A lot of people might be wondering who can become a financial consultant?

Mr. Stewart:

To put it in a nutshell, there are two fundamental skills needed: firstly, the ability to constantly hone one’s knowledge and secondly, to posses exceptional interpersonal skills.

Malwina:

Could you elaborate on those skills?

Mr. Stewart:

Yes of course, a financial consultant is a personal adviser that needs to be trustworthy, affable and communicative, but also have the know-how to advise wisely. To do that a consultant needs to keep himself up-to-date with the latest financial information.

Malwina:

Do you need to have experience or can you learn the tricks of the trade on the job?

Mr. Stewart:

Experience is highly sought after, simply because our clients expect results, however the experience does not have to be long. All consultancies offer different types of training, a young person can quickly achieve a high level of success if he is able to learn.

Malwina:

Is consultancy a growing trend in Poland?

Mr. Stewart:

Definitely, Polish people are starting to realize the importance of saving and investing, which is why financial advisers will be highly sought after in the next few years as the trend progresses. What needs improving though, is the credibility of consultancy firms. The role of the consultant is not only to increase the client’s capital but also protect it. I would say consultancy needs further development and a better insight into the actual role of the adviser.

Malwina:

Thank you for an in-depth interview
